Analysis
The generational online spending gap in Germany is not just a question of how much — it's a question of what. Baby Boomers allocate nearly one in five online euros to Home & Garden (18%), more than double Gen Z's 10%, while their 11% share for Health & Beauty likewise dwarfs Gen Z's 6.5%. Gen Z, in turn, dominates Electronics at 22% of categorised spend versus 16% for Boomers, and Apparel at 14% versus 8%.
Category mix reflects life stage, not just digital habits
These splits track closely with life-stage economics: Boomers entering or already in retirement invest in home upkeep and personal health, while Gen Z's heavier weighting toward apparel aligns with the fashion-first profile documented across German e-commerce research — fashion is the category where Gen Z most decisively prefers the online channel over physical stores. The electronics skew is consistent with a cohort that integrates technology purchasing into social identity and is heavily influenced by TikTok and Instagram product discovery. Food & Beverages also skews toward Boomers (11% vs. 6% for Gen Z), reflecting older buyers' growing comfort with online grocery — a habit accelerated across Europe during the pandemic years. Methodology
Category shares were calculated from online retail purchases by German active buyers born 1946–1964 (Baby Boomers) and 1997–2007 (Gen Z) over September 2025 to August 2026. The five categories shown — Electronics, Home & Garden, Apparel & Accessories, Health & Beauty, and Food, Beverages & Tobacco — are top-level segments drawn from purchase receipt data. Shares are expressed as a proportion of categorised spend; purchases without a matched product category are excluded from the denominator. Estimates are calibrated to the German online buyer population using the same demographic benchmarks applied to the generational spend totals.
