Analysis

Among all Instagram feed impressions classified as news-related in Germany between April and July 2026, traditional broadcasters and publishers account for 77%, political commentators for 20%, and dedicated news creators for the remaining 3%. The dominance of institutional media — most of it from verified accounts — confirms that Germany's Instagram news ecosystem is still largely anchored to established brands rather than independent influencers.

Warum Sender dominieren — und was das für TikTok-Vergleiche bedeutet

The Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2026 found that across social platforms, content from traditional news media and journalists receives the most attention — and Germany is no exception. ARD, ZDF, Spiegel, and their peers have invested heavily in Instagram-native formats (short clips, stories, carousels) since 2022, building verified followings that now deliver the bulk of news impressions. The 20% share held by political creators — commentators and politicians' own accounts — is a meaningful minority: the 2026 Reuters report flagged growing attention to political influencers among younger German users, even as trust in them remains lower than in institutional sources. The 3% carved out by independent news creators mirrors global patterns where that niche, though culturally influential, has yet to match the raw reach of legacy media on feed-based platforms. Methodology

Instagram organic feed impressions (posts viewed and videos watched) from German-market users between April and July 2026 were restricted to accounts classified as news- or politics-oriented. Each account was then categorised as broadcaster/publisher (media-type accounts), political creator (politics niche), or news creator (news niche). Shares reflect each category's proportion of total news-classified impressions in the period. Verified-account status is noted separately per category.
