Analysis

High repeat-purchase rates at both Amazon and Zooplus confirm that online pet shopping in Germany has become a habitual, not incidental, behavior for the majority of their buyers — mirroring the subscription-like dynamics that define pet care worldwide.

Subscriptions and auto-ship: the loyalty engine behind the numbers

Pet food and consumables are uniquely suited to repeat purchasing: bowls run empty, litter boxes need refilling, and schedules are predictable. Zooplus has explicitly expanded its subscription delivery offering, while Amazon's Prime ecosystem and Subscribe & Save program make auto-ship frictionless. The result — 63–66% repeat rates over 18 months — sits well above general e-commerce norms. Fressnapf's online channel shows a somewhat lower repeat rate at 40%, which likely reflects its stronger reliance on in-store visits for routine restocking. Direct-to-consumer pet nutrition brands achieve a 40%+ repeat rate despite limited logistics infrastructure, suggesting genuine product loyalty among buyers of specialized diets. Across the German pet care market, subscription models and auto-ship are estimated to cover 10–15% of all online pet food purchases, a segment growing fastest among younger, urban dog and cat owners. Methodology

Repeat-purchase rate is the share of buyers from each retailer group who placed at least two separate orders from that retailer within the January 2025 to June 2026 observation window. This frequency metric serves as a proxy for subscription or auto-ship behavior, since explicit subscription flags are not available in purchase records. The population is German adult buyers of online pet-category products who made at least one confirmed order.
