Analysis

A €60 gap in average order value between Zooplus and Amazon lays bare two entirely different shopping missions in Germany's online pet market: bulk specialty runs versus frequent convenience top-ups.

The specialist premium explains itself

Zooplus — Europe's leading pure-play online pet retailer — has built its model around large, planned orders of pet food and supplies, often supported by subscription features. Fressnapf's online channel follows a similar logic at €61 per basket. Shoppers on these platforms are typically stocking up on heavy consumables like dry kibble, wet food multipacks, or cat litter — categories where buying in bulk is rational and shipping costs favor larger orders. Amazon, by contrast, attracts convenience-driven, low-basket trips: a replacement toy, a small pouch of treats, or a top-up bag of food. Direct-to-consumer brands such as Wolfsblut, Vet-Concept, Pets Deli, and Josera sit in a different premium register with mid-to-high baskets, reflecting their focus on specialized nutrition. Germany's online pet food e-commerce channel is projected to grow at around 7% annually through 2033, meaning these retailer-type distinctions will only sharpen as subscription and autoship models deepen. Zooplus and Amazon's contrasting repeat-purchase rates are explored in the pet buyer loyalty and reorder rates chart.

Methodology

Average order value (AOV) calculated from online pet-category purchase records of German adults between January 2025 and June 2026. Each order's total spend was attributed to a retailer group — Amazon, Zooplus, Fressnapf, direct-to-consumer brands, other specialist e-tailers, and general retail. Orders with implausible totals were excluded. The metric reflects the typical single-order spend per retailer, not total annual spend per buyer.
